I carry string.
All the time.
I always have a length of string or cord, sometimes paracord, sometimes nylon, sometimes braided cotton, in my back pocket. I pull it out and practice knots. I close my eyes and try to tie favorite knots. I tie knots and then carefully de-form and de-construct, finding different ways of tying the knot.
I often create a bracelet out of my length of string: plaiting, twisting, or knotting.
Then I untie it all and try a different knot.
My first knot was the bow tie knot, the knot most commonly used to tie our shoelaces. Five years old, struggling to learn this complicated knot. Frustrated. Asking mom to show it to me again.
But I learned it.
And I continue to learn.
Every time I learn a new knot, my first impulse is to show it to someone. But learning a new knot is difficult. It takes time. And if you don't tie it repeatedly...if you don't really ever use it...you forget it. In my experience, most people use only two or three knots. Most people aren't driven to learn knots that they won't need in daily life.
But I am.
I am driven to learn new knots, and I'm driven to teach new knots to others. So this website is a way of teaching others. At least, it's a way that I can feel that I am teaching others.
That's okay by me.
Happy knotting!
